Here are some top mountain destinations for those seeking quick escapes from Durango.
Telluride, Colorado (118 miles): Nestled in the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From world-class skiing in winter to hiking and mountain biking in summer, this charming town offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. And it is simply gorgeous in any season. The historic main street is lined with vibrant shops and eateries, providing a delightful atmosphere for a weekend retreat, just bring your parking vibes because finding a spot can sometimes be a challenge. I took a girls weekend trip here once and signed up for a skate skiing class. It was a wonderful experience (and a great workout!).
Mesa Verde National Park (35 miles): Immerse yourself in the rich history of Mesa Verde, where ancient cliff dwellings tell the tales of the Ancestral Pueblo people. Explore the archaeological wonders during the day and revel in the tranquility of the starlit skies at night. Mesa Verde offers a unique blend of cultural exploration and natural beauty, as well as a solid learning experience for adults and children.
Pagosa Springs, Colorado (60 miles): Known for its soothing hot springs, Pagosa Springs is an ideal destination for relaxation. Unwind in the healing waters after a day of hiking, fishing, or exploring the nearby San Juan National Forest. The town's charming atmosphere and friendly locals make it a welcoming retreat.
Silverton, Colorado (48 miles): A historic mining town surrounded by towering peaks, Silverton transports you back in time. Enjoy the scenic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad ride, and then explore the high-alpine terrain through activities like off-road adventures and backcountry skiing. The dramatic landscapes make Silverton a photographer's paradise. And the road to get there can be STUNNING! We’ve travelled up to Silverton just for lunch because we love the beautiful drive.
Ouray, Colorado (42 miles): Known as the "Switzerland of America," Ouray is a picturesque mountain town encircled by stunning peaks. The famous Million Dollar Highway leads you to this gem, offering not only breathtaking views but also opportunities for ice climbing, hiking, and rejuvenating in natural hot springs. Some people hate the million dollar highway, but I am a huge fan (unless, of course, the roads are treacherous).
Purgatory Resort (28 miles): For a quick mountain escape close to home, Purgatory Resort provides a variety of outdoor activities. In winter, hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding, while summer invites mountain biking, zip-lining, the mountain coaster, and scenic chairlift rides. The resort's diverse offerings make it a year-round destination for adventure seekers. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful mountain resort within such a small distance.
Vallecito Reservoir (18 miles): Tucked away in the mountains, Vallecito is a serene getaway for fishing, boating, camping, and lakeside relaxation. Escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this mountain retreat. We love to take the padleboards out in the summer even though the water is usually frigid. Cabins and campgrounds offer cozy accommodations for a tranquil weekend escape.
