As winter blankets our picturesque town of Durango with a glistening layer of snow, families can rejoice in a wonderland of seasonal activities specially tailored for kids. From adrenaline-pumping adventures on the slopes to enchanting winter festivals, here's a guide to ensuring a magical winter for your little ones in Southwest Colorado.
Hit the Slopes: Skiing and Snowboarding Galore! Durango is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts, and the whole family can get in on the snowy action. Purgatory Resort, just a short drive from downtown, boasts a range of slopes catering to all skill levels. From bunny hills for beginners to challenging trails for seasoned pros, your little ones can learn to carve the snow or hone their existing skills with expert instructors. Don't forget to equip them with the proper gear – helmets, gloves, and layers are key for a safe and cozy experience.
Winter Wonderland Festivals: Community Magic in the Snow: Durango comes alive during the winter months with festive events that captivate the hearts of both young and old. Check out the Snowdown Festival, a local favorite featuring a flurry of family-friendly activities like parades, games, and snow sculpting competitions. Bundle up the kids and dive into the community spirit, creating lasting memories amidst winter merriment.
Snowshoeing Adventures: A Serene Exploration of Nature: For a slower-paced but equally enchanting winter experience, consider exploring the snowy landscapes around Durango through snowshoeing. This is one of our favorite activities to with our little in a backpack. There are various trails suitable for families (we love Molas Pass and the trek up to Engineer Mountain meadow), offering a chance to observe the serene beauty of the winter wilderness while getting some gentle exercise. Remember to dress in layers and bring along snacks to keep the little ones energized during your winter trek.
Sleigh Rides: A Storybook Experience for All Ages: Step into a winter fairy tale with a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Local providers (like Bears Ranch) offer scenic rides through snow-covered fields, providing a magical experience for kids and adults alike. Blankets and hot cocoa often accompany these charming excursions, making for a cozy and memorable family adventure.
Ice Skating: Glide into Winter Joy: Strap on your skates and hit the ice at the Chapman Hill Ice Rink. This rink is a perfect spot for families to enjoy some classic winter fun. Beginners can take lessons, and there's often hot chocolate available to warm up chilly fingers and noses. I don’t know of an outdoor, public ice rink in the area, but please let me know!
